s01 | e04 Determined to Rise

Four students that traveled to Thailand, India, and Guatemala this year, Daniela Baltag, Suley Vazquez, Grace Howard, and Tia Joseph, discuss the different ways in which they rose stronger than before.

Whether it's Daniela discovering how to slow down in Thailand, Suley fearing she might never walk again, Grace almost allowing herself to be eaten by wild animals, or Tia standing up for herself poetically, their determination is inspirational. Perhaps like us, you find yourself asking, "What is my potential?" and hopefully, desire to rise to the occasion.

Even though she says only she and her mom enjoy it, we’re pretty certain you will too!

s01 | e03 Coming Home to Yourself

Four students that traveled to India and Guatemala this year, Tania Mostovoy, Khim Fuentes To, Jahmeil Ennis, and Jasmine Acevedo Guerrero discuss how your perception of home really changes when you are on a journey. Sometimes this can pose a challenge to your mental health. Other times, it is when you return and are forced into isolation after incredible adventures with people you’ve grown to call family that your perception of home changes dramatically. These students discuss those difficulties and more in this episode.

s01 | e02 Doing It Anyway

Hear from three students that traveled to Guatemala this year, Caitlin Hacker, Zack Wegner, and Delana Wilkins all of whom faced challenges in making the most out of their study abroad experiences, both before and during their travels, but they all leaned in to those challenges, and did it anyways.

This episode is for those of you needing some inspiration to push your comfort zone and make the most of it.

This episode is also for those wondering what it means to maintain a new friendship while social distancing. The final segment of this episode is a bonus feature with Caitlin and Delana who met each other at our monthly meetings before the study abroad trip. They chat about what it is like to become friends while studying abroad with a group and how to maintain a new friendship particularly during Covid-19.

What keeps Black students from studying abroad… answered in this article written by Brandon Tensley and featured in the Atlantic. The article goes on to explain why when only 5% of African American students study abroad, it’s a problem for everyone.

‘Travel Tips and Tales from Black students Who Have Studied Abroad‘ is the resource in Delana’s story, that she receives when Delana’s mom and former co-workers worry really gets to her.

They worried that Delana would not be safe traveling, particularly while Black. This e-book is a great resource for navigating travel and international education, which has been dominated historically by middle to upper middle class and white people.

s01 | e01 Finding Your Vision

Hear from four students that traveled to Guatemala this year, Maritza Rodriguez Zapien, Ismael (Ish) Jaimes Riquelme, Oscar Moreno Lule, and Angelina (Angie) Ramirez, all of whom encountered new ways of living that challenged their worldview and inspired them to make a change either in their education or their vocational goals.

‘Finding your vision,’ is one of the main reasons Carpe Mundi believes it is so important for all students to have equitable access to international experiences because it’s difficult to imagine alternatives without contextual experiences.

Often, the parameters of our imagination are what we’ve been exposed to as possibilities.
