Annie Johnson

My name is Annie Johnson and I am new to the Carpe Mundi program. I am more than excited to be apart of this program because I’ve always dreamed to travel around the world, to meet and learn about other cultures. I also love to interact with people so I am happy to pursue my dream to travel. I am originally from Liberia, but I mostly grew up in the United States. I have 7 siblings total and I’m a middle child. I am also the first person in my family to attend college. Something that I’m looking forward to about the Carpe Mundi program is meeting students that are also pursuing the same mission as me to travel. I am happy to meet and get to know everyone because we’ll be able to put aside our differences and get to know each other. I am a very outgoing individual and I love to make others feel valued.

"It always seems impossible until it's done. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Kari Nguyen

I am Kari Nguyen. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I am the first generation in my family that got the opportunity to go to college. I plan on majoring in Business and start a very successful business one day that consists of everything I am passionate about. I want to make a difference in this world one day by always giving back to those less fortunate than me.

I am a very adventurous person. I love to travel and be able to see and experience new things that would help me grow and become the person I am meant to be. Hiking has been one of my favorite things to do because the views are amazing once you reach the end.

Kayla Keller

My name is Kayla and I had the opportunity to travel through Carpe Mundi to Spain and Morocco. It was such an incredible journey for me. For being the first time out of the country for me I learned so much! I discovered a lot about the culture and community of the people in Morocco and Spain. Because of the great communities I was blessed to visit, I have gained some forever friendships with people on the other side of the world!

I have also grown myself. The trip has helped me gain a new confidence in myself and my potential. I have recently moved from Portland to attend Boise State University and get my degree in Social Work with hopes to go into the Therapy field.

Thanks to this trip, I have a new found love for adventure, travel, and the beauty of the outdoors and can’t wait for what new adventures lie ahead of me.

Olivia Lewis

My name is Olivia Lewis, I was born and raised here in Portland. I have a strong passion for reading, music, art, and adventure. My hobbies are drawing, photography, board games, hiking, hearing new stories, and trying to continually grow more compassion. I've been working for the past four years at New Avenues for Youth as a youth leader in different jobs, and I would love to be able to keep growing any support skills and knowledge I have to benefit those around me. My hope for this travel experience is to gain a whole new perspective and understanding on the world and to better be able to communicate with the amazing people that are on it. I can't wait to keep learning!
